Joakim Nilsson is moving from Arminia Bielefeld to St. Louis in the MLS

Comes from Bielefeld on a free transfer

MLS newcomers St. Louis City SC continue their shopping spree in the Bundesliga and help themselves to the German upper house for the fourth time. After Roman Bürki (Borussia Dortmund), João Klauss (TSG Hoffenheim) and Tomas Ostrak (1. FC Köln), Joakim Nilsson is now following the call of sporting director Lutz Pfannenstiel. The 28-year-old central defender is coming to Arminia Bielefeld on a free transfer after the end of his contract and has signed a contract until 2026.

“We managed to bring another top player with enormous quality and experience into our squad,” said Pfannenstiel. “Nilsson is the kind of defender that any team would want as he is a leader and has all the qualities to be successful in any league. He is strong in tackles, has a good header game and a good build-up. We are confident that all his experience and qualities will make him one of the best defenders in Major League Soccer.”

Nilsson moved from IF Elfsborg to Bielefeld in the summer of 2019 for 400,000 euros and was part of the team promoted in 2020. In total, the Swede made 89 appearances for Arminia and scored four goals. In the first half of the year, Nilsson will play like his new teammates at St. Louis City SC 2, the transition team in the MLS Next Pro, before the first MLS season follows in 2023.
