Magdeburg (dpa) – GDR record national player Joachim Streich is waiting according to his own statements for a new date for a stem cell transplant.
The Magdeburger, who suffers from anemia, should have been treated three weeks ago. “Everything was prepared, I was already on the ward. But then pneumonia intervened. I had to be released. Those were very bad days for me,” said the 70-year-old to “Bild”.
East football legend Streich suffers from advanced myelodysplastic syndrome, which can progress to leukemia. So far, Streich’s blood has been renewed through transfusions in Magdeburg, but a doctor advised Streich to use more effective treatment. “He told me that he used to be a fan in the stands when I was still active. I felt like I was in good hands there straight away,” said Streich, who celebrated 55 goals in 102 international matches during his national team career.
The former striker, who scored 229 goals in 378 Oberliga games for FC Hansa Rostock and 1. FC Magdeburg, has retained his fighting spirit. “I’ve had the diagnosis for a long time. And I’m trying to deal with it in a positive way. Apart from the fact that I often feel weak, I’m doing quite well.” Streich thanked his stem cell donor in advance: “I know I will never find out who he is, but I take my hat off to him, thank you!”
