Two men have been arrested for allegedly stealing jewelry from an elderly woman in Waalre. This happened on Thursday. The suspects are men from Leeuwarden, aged 32 and 21.
The 87-year-old woman was at home when she suddenly heard someone ring the doorbell on Thursday. Because she couldn’t see who was at the door of the apartment complex on the intercom, she decided to walk downstairs to see who had rung the doorbell.
‘Are you properly insured?’
The man standing there claimed that he was insured and came to see if the woman is properly insured for her jewelry. The victim then opened the door and took the man to her apartment. There the man asked the woman to collect her jewelry so that he could judge them. The woman then took her jewelry and, together with the man, she set it out on the table.
Suddenly her phone rang. She got a call from an unknown number. She then saw the man snatch all the jewelry together and run away. The elderly woman cried out loudly for help. As she entered the complex’s gallery, she saw an inmate struggling with the suspect. But after a struggle, the suspect managed to escape.
Police are concerned
Police say they are seeing more and more robberies like this. “Thieves who contact old, vulnerable victims and pretend to be employees of an insurance company. The thieves ask if the elderly have gold in their house and if they can see this to see whether the elderly are properly insured. We see the number victims of these practices and we are therefore concerned about this form of theft.”
