“There aren’t many pubs like this anymore,” says Jerry Leger of the video for “Three Hours Ahead Of Midnight.” He means the Imperial Pub in Toronto. There’s an aquarium and there’s a baseball game on the TV. Jerry Leger plays with his band on the small stage. The album Donlands, like all of Jerry Leger’s music, is a nostalgic affair. On this record, his schlocky guitar playing is framed by the Farfisa organ and piano.

The warm sound was set up by Mark Howard, who has worked with Bob Dylan and Lucinda Williams. And with Tom Waits: Jerry Leger was particularly impressed by “Real Gone”. Leger also loves “Pledging My Love” by Johnny Ace, which goes much further back in time. Honor the artist’s words, but “Donlands” – named after the theater where it was recorded – sounds like the Byrds, Gram Parsons and the ballads of Elvis Costello. So incredibly good. And it is beautifully sung. There aren’t many songwriters like Jerry Leger left.
