Jeroen Meus struggles with the death of his brother: “He was chronically ill, I have chronic grief” | BV

BVThe death of his brother Wim at the end of last year has seriously affected Jeroen Meus (44). The cook told this on Wednesday evening in ‘The table of four’. “I had to go to therapy, I was completely stuck.”

Wim died at the end of last year of colon cancer. “He has been ill for 3.5 years,” says Jeroen. During the conversation with Gert Verhulst, the cook often had a hard time. “It didn’t look so good from the start. There were metastases, and that’s rarely a good sign. Yet Wim never wanted to talk about death. He showed tremendous fighting spirit and is such an inspiration to all of us.”

Jeroen, who also talked about his new book ‘Groentekost’, was very close with his brother. “We used to sleep together in one room. There are three of us at home – three brothers. A close brotherhood. It’s very strange when someone suddenly falls out of it. That is a great loss.”

Meus has not yet processed the death of his brother. “He was chronically ill, and I am chronically sad,” he said. “The whole family, by the way. Only now can I talk a little bit about it, and that’s a breakthrough. In the beginning I was completely stuck. I was really deep and couldn’t move forward. That is why I started taking therapy.”

On the advice of his therapist, the chief now does something with his grief. “After Wim’s death, I received a lot of mourning cards from people who, just like me, have lost a loved one,” he explained. “I am now looking for those people for a TV program and I am investigating how you can deal with grief. It’s the program I have to make. As a tribute to Wim. In addition, I hope it helps me to find peace.”
