SalaryHow much do you earn? We ask a Dutch person that every week. Today: Jeroen (35) works 38 hours a week as a steel construction draftsman.
What do you earn?
“I get 3350 euros gross and it is 2550 euros net.”
Happy with?
,,Yes, but I do have some ambitions. I have a bachelor’s degree and would like to grow. Both in salary and position. I would like to go to the 4500 euros gross. I think that’s a nice number. I still have to find out what the possibilities are within this company.”
What are your secondary employment conditions?
“Since the increase in the petrol price, my employer has increased the travel allowance from 19 cents to 30 cents per kilometer. But the extra 11 cents is still fully taxed. In my case it is beneficial because I am no longer entitled to benefits. I can imagine that a number of colleagues may experience problems with this. Although most of my colleagues live nearby.
In order to develop myself, I will soon be able to follow a course worth 4500 euros. I am now looking with my employer to see if this is the right course for me, but it will not be due to the costs.”
Have you negotiated your salary?
“I did when I came in. I had that done by a recruiter. Because I’m not very good at that. I am too modest to market myself. I asked him what I am worth. He then said 3200 euros gross. He put me in touch with this company. They looked for a scale, but that meant that 50 euros were deducted: their bid was therefore 3150 euros. I found that acceptable. In the meantime, I got a salary increase.”
Has your salary increased compared to the previous job?
,,Before this I worked as a work planner in the infrastructure and I earned 2700 euros gross there. So I’ve made good progress. I got a nice promotion through job hopping. Again using the same recruiter. If I had to do it myself, I might have said 3000 euros and it would have become 2900 euros. My recruiter put a few hundred euros on top of it.”
Ever tried to negotiate yourself?
,,No. I did turn down an offer once. I would surrender at the bottom. The employer said: this is what we pay everyone, then I said: then it will stop.”

Do you know what your colleagues earn?
“I have a picture of it. Some are quite open about it. From others I can somewhat estimate based on the scales. Am I open about it myself? It’s not a secret, but it’s more that it’s not mentioned. It is up to everyone to be open about it or not. It is fairly new that we talk about salary in the Netherlands, not everyone is used to that.”
How do you see your future?
“At the moment I am a single earner. My girlfriend can’t get to work yet, because she doesn’t speak the language yet. Now we’re breaking even. That does weigh on me. Hopefully she can find a job by the end of the year and we have some more space.”
