Vocalist Jenni Vartiainen has been living in New York for the past few years. Family life has naturally taken the lion’s share of time, but at the same time Vartiainen has been quietly planning the Mestarit tour, which will be starred alongside him this fall by Kaija Koo, Vesala and Ellinoora.

Vartiainen’s plans were to travel to Finland for a tour, but sad news Vesa-Matti Loirin death made me change my plans.

– That’s why I came here early. I sang in church and it was important for me to be there, because we were really close and dear friends, says Vartiainen.

For Vartiainen, who has toured around Finland for two decades, performing at Loir’s funeral will remain in her memory forever.

– It was a really beautiful moment, he sighs.

Back to the stage

Vartiainen says that the four years he spent in New York passed quickly and that he needed a gig break. Lately, the longing for stages has started to rear its head.

– It has been really good to be away, but now it also feels like it’s a really good time to come back. And the fans have been excited for me to return to the stage. Of course, it will be very happy, he says.

The first training sessions with the Masters team in Finland were exciting after a long break.

– I wondered for a moment how this thing is going to work! However, I quickly noticed that performing is pretty much in the back of my mind, when it comes to 20 years in music.

The upcoming tour is also special because Vartiainen is used to performing as a solo artist. Now the focus is instead divided between four female stars.

– This is very unique in every way, and it has marked this entire design process as well. We somehow have a really good balance between us in what each one brings to the table. We are also suitably different, and we all know each other’s productions very well.

Loneliness unites

Vartiainen says that a deep connection has been found with Kaija Koo, Vesala and Ellinoora, and the four have shared a lot of their experiences in the music industry. Solo artists have found a lot of common ground in these discussions.

– An artist’s work is quite lonely, and it involves a lot of things that are difficult to open up if you don’t have personal experience. It has been natural to open up about these things with them, when we all have similar experiences.

Vesala has known Vartiainen since school, as the two once attended the same high school. In-depth conversations with Kaija Koo were exchanged recently on the set of Vain lääää program in 2017, when the two participated in the program.

Ellinooraa Vartiainen, on the other hand, has gotten to know her at various galas, and they once found common ground in nightlife as well.

– We have sometimes sung in karaoke in the wee hours of the morning Aretha Franklin tooVartiainen says with joy in his voice.

When Vartiainen is asked what things unite the female quartet, she immediately has an answer ready in her mind.

– We are all really unyielding, precise about our own story and sensitive. From the beginning, this has been an ambitious project for all of us, and it is important for everyone to polish things to the last detail. That’s exactly why it’s been wonderful to share responsibility, make decisions together and get perspectives equally from everyone.

After the tour, Vartiainen’s plans are still partially open.

– I’m back in the studio and I have a lot of things bubbling in my mind. I don’t know yet what schedule things will take, he says mysteriously.

The Mestarit tour is Finland’s biggest joint tour of all time. Arena gigs will be seen in late autumn 2022 in Espoo, Vaasa, Turku, Kuopio, Oulu and Tampere.
