Paul McCartney has posted a 1994 voice recording of the recently deceased Jeff Beck. In the track “Why Are They Cutting Down the Rainforest”, the musician, accompanied by a guitar instrumental, spoke about the problems of factory farming and deforestation of the rainforest. He criticized the fact that the green lungs of the earth were being destroyed for grazing land, even though plants needed for medicines grew there.

“The sad passing of Jeff Beck – a good friend of mine and a great guitarist – has reminded me of when we worked together on a campaign for vegetarianism many years ago,” McCartney wrote in a statement. He commented on the guitar playing in the background: “It’s great because it’s Jeff!”

The recording became part of his Meat Free Monday campaign. It was first used for the US radio series “Oobu Joobu”, which McCartney moderated and designed. In it he gave an insight into his life, played demos and test recordings and highlighted campaigns that were important to him – including vegetarianism.

The re-release of Beck’s statement is said to be the start of a new Meat Free Monday campaign that will involve friends and colleagues. McCartney and his daughters Mary and Stella started the campaign in 2009. They want to encourage people to eat meat-free at least once a week to protect the climate and improve their own health.

Jeff Beck died on January 10 after contracting bacterial meningitis. He was 78 years old.
