Ronnie Wood has spoken about Jeff Beck in an interview, affirming that the recently deceased guitarist would not have been able to cope with the Rolling Stones’ strict music program of recording, touring, constant media attention and tough lifestyle. In doing so, he responded to the rumor that Beck once almost became a member of the Stones.

“He couldn’t have gotten along with the schedule! Eric Clapton once said to me, ‘I could have joined the band,’ and I said, ‘Yeah, but you have to live with them too, Eric!'” Wood said in an interview with “mojo“. “Anything that had to do with being in the spotlight, he would say, ‘You can take care of that,’ and he would pull out. And Jeff didn’t like that simplistic blues and rock ‘n’ roll approach,” he explained.

Wood played in the Jeff Beck Group in the ’60s before eventually moving on to The Faces and then the Rolling Stones in 1975. Longtime friend Jeff Beck passed away on January 10 at the age of 78 from bacterial meningitis.

The Rolling Stones recently made headlines when it was announced that Paul McCartney would play bass on their forthcoming album.
