Jeff Beck & Johnny Depp: “18” – a relaxed work of eternal 18-year-olds (review & stream)

We have known since the mid-1960s and the time with the Yardbirds that Jeff Beck can trigger goosebumps with his guitar playing. The fact that permanent pirate Johnny Depp can sing more than respectably and write really good songs may be new to some. One of his two compositions, a hymn to the wonderful Hedy Lamarr, actress and inventor, stands out here despite some illustrious covers.

Jeff Beck, on the other hand, knows when to take a step back and doesn’t spoil the Beach Boys’ “Caroline, No” in any way. And even “What’s Going On”, close to the original, works with this unusual male friendship without ending as elevator muzak. A relaxed work of eternal 18-year-olds. (Warner)
