He passed away today, at the age of 96, Jean-Marie Le Penfounder and former leader of the French National Front. The news was given by the family to the agency AFP. Born on 20 June 1928 in La Trinité-sur-Mer, in 2011 he left daughter Marine the leadership of the party, from which he was expelled only a few years laterdue to political differences.

Jean-Marie Le Pen’s political career began in the 1950s, with his election as a member of the National Assembly, which made him one of the youngest members of the time. After experiences with various political formations, in 1972 he founded the Front Nationala far-right party that placed itself in strong opposition to Gaullism and traditional parties. In all, Le Pen ran for five presidential electionsuntil the moment of the clash, against Jacques Chirac, in the run-off in 2002. He was the first exponent of the non-Gaullist right to achieve a similar result.

In 2011, Le Pen relinquished leadership of the National Front to his daughter Marinebut political differences with the latter led to his own in 2015 kicked out of the party which he had founded and led for over forty years. After the expulsion, Le Pen continued her political activity by joining the European group Alliance for Peace and Freedom and establishing a public archive dedicated to her career.

Raised in Brittany, Jean-Marie Le Pen married Pierrette Lalannewith whom he had three children. The marriage, however, ended in 1987, with a divorce marked by media tensions. Several members of his family, especially his daughter Marine and his nephew Marion Maréchalstill hold central roles in French politics today.
