Jean-Luc Godard died on September 13 at the age of 91. Now it is also known how his death took place: the director legend used euthanasia to finally free himself from his suffering.
Patrick Jeanneret, an advisor to the family, told the AFP news agency: “Mr Godard has taken legal help in Switzerland to voluntarily leave”. The reason for this was several diseases from which the 91-year-old suffered. The Liberation denied the latter: “He wasn’t sick, he was just exhausted. So he made the decision to end it. It was his decision and it was important to him that it be known,” said one person who asked to remain anonymous. Another source from his circle of acquaintances confirmed this statement.
Godard experienced “a peaceful death”.
Godard was born in Paris in 1930 and had French and Swiss nationality. He has lived in Switzerland since the 1970s. Active euthanasia is not allowed in France. Doctors can only numb terminally ill patients with drugs until death occurs. Godard’s family reports the director’s peaceful death. A funeral service is not planned.
