On Tuesday (February 21), Liam Gallagher spoke quite eloquently about the debate surrounding the term “Nepo Babies”. The is a rather derogatory term for the children of famous and successful parents who are also famous and successful and for whom the assumption is that the two are closely related.

The list of actors, models and musicians who can be given the label is long. Julia Friese has dedicated her current pop column in MUSIKEXPRESS to the meaning and background of the discourse.
Liam Gallagher isn’t the first celebrity to share his perspective on the debate, since the label has provided a handy starting point for dealing with nepotism in the entertainment industry. His brother Noel Gallagher, Jamie Lee Curtis, Zoë Kravitz, Lilly Allen and Bono’s daughter Eve Hewson have also spoken out, among others.
Liam Gallagher isn’t convinced
His tweet roughly translates to: “All this gossip about the kids of famous parents making a little money – at least they’re not running around robbing old people. Shut up, you jealous, ugly assholes.”
Gallagher’s sons Gene and Lennon are both models with around 193,000 and 140,000 followers respectively on Instagram. Her father doesn’t seem convinced that nepotism should be a structural problem in his and related industries.
His brother Noel had commented on a comment by his daughter Anaïs. She linked her success as a photographer and model to the privileges her parents gave her, but she resisted general attributions and the negative connotations of the term. Her father’s attitude does not differ in principle from that of his brother, but is clearly more diplomatic. Noel echoed the popular argument that “Nepo-Babies” need to be good at what they do, too. Neither of the former Oasis partners made an attempt to contribute to positively appropriating the label.
