Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit: “Weathervanes” (Review & Stream)

A marriage in public, but not for her. Some tracks can be interpreted as Jason Isbell’s answer to Amanda Shires’ “Take It Like A Man”. “Middle Of The Morning” – Country & R&B from the Memphis school – sharpens the feeling when someone just has to believe in it (even if it’s the woman you love). But Isbell wouldn’t be Isbell if he didn’t widen his gaze.

“Save The World” (School Shootings) remains generic, unlike “Cast Iron Skillet” (Southern heritage). In addition, the 400 Unit plays big, from the string-surrounded “Death Wish” (with a tricky beat) to the acoustic magic “Strawberry Woman” and the Keef-inspired “This Ain’t It” to the final suite “Miles”. And Shires gets involved too, of course.
