Around fifteen thousand people, especially men, manage to escape from the enclave in the night of 11 to 12 July. Armed with some pistols, guns and hand grenades, they flee into the mountains to hopefully reach the safe Tuzla.

‘Grandpa was too weak to flee’

“It seemed like the Serbs mainly to go healthy, strong men, so we said goodbye to the men. Women, children and the elderly were left behind. My grandfather was too weak to flee and thought they would leave him alone,” Jasmina explains.

Together with about twenty thousand left behind, the family flees from Jasmina to Potočari, a few kilometers from Srebrenica. On July 13, the refugees are put on buses by heavily armed Serbian soldiers, with the support of Dutchbat for an evacuation to Tuzla.
