Presenter Maria Veitola says in her Instagram stories that she received insulting messages after she criticized the Finnish media for reporting on solo rower Jari Saario.
In her Instagram stories on Saturday, Veitola criticized the Finnish media about the “high intensity” that Saario’s sea voyage has been followed. On Friday, the Saario got into sea trouble on its way from Cape Horn in Chile to Cape Town in South Africa.
– Of course I also want him to survive, but this is where all the inequality becomes so visible: whose emergency is important, who is helped, who is tried to be saved, who is prayed for, Veitola wrote, among other things, on Saturday.
Veitola says in her new Instagram story published on Tuesday that she criticized the media, not Saario.
– On Saturday, I was looking for news about the situation in Iran without finding it, and the post was born out of that frustration, Veitola writes.
Veitola also says that he had to close his private messages.
– I had to close the dm when this harassment started, which is now pouring out on the side of the feed as well.
Veitola writes that freedom of speech and expression is important in a democracy.
– Let’s stick to it. We try to tolerate the fact that we don’t always agree or that there may be different points of view on different things.
– But this kind of swearing, hate speech, painting and insulting shouting is not freedom of speech. It is hate speech, the only purpose of which is to scare and silence. Sorry, it doesn’t work for me, Veitola concludes.
