Japan high-speed train operator cuts thousands of jobs | Economy

East Japan Railway, the operator of trains around the Japanese capital Tokyo and high-speed trains to the north of the country, is going to cut thousands of jobs. Due to the corona pandemic and the aging population in Japan, there is less demand for train services.

The super-fast Shinkansen trains in Japan are also known as bullet trains. According to a spokesperson, about 10 percent of the workforce in the rail activities will disappear, which amounts to about 4,000 jobs. For example, the company will no longer fill jobs that become available through retirement and will make less use of people who work on trains.

Due to working from home during corona, fewer people used the train in Japan. On top of that is the shrinking population and an aging population. The turnover of the train activities of East Japan Railway is therefore declining. The company is focusing on other businesses for growth, including retail.
