Janko and Wrister Elema open their arable farm in Zijldijk to the public on Saturday 3 September. They do this in the context of the National Potato Harvesting Day, which is taking place for the second time.
On National Potato Harvest Day, six Dutch growers open their fields to teach interested parties about sustainable growth and harvest. Activities are programmed for this at each location. For example, visitors dig up a bag of potatoes to take home. Free.
Closer to source of the food
National Potato Harvesting Day is an initiative of the Dutch Potato Organization (NAO). The aim is to bring people closer to the source of the food on their plate.
The Pieper survey, carried out on behalf of the NAO, shows that 30 percent of Groningen residents have never been on a farm and 49 percent have never been on a potato farm. Nationally, it is even 31 and 58 percent respectively.
Arable farm Elema, de only northern participant, is open to the public on National Potato Harvesting Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (free).
