Janik Haberer on Union Berlin’s goals: “Leave the church in the village”

Before the top game at BVB

Even if the chance of the Champions League is great, Union Berlin does not want to correct the season goal upwards a second time. “We want to qualify for international business. That’s no secret. However, you have to leave the church in the village and say that we have to give 100 percent so that we have a chance of winning games. If that’s not the case, we lose the games,” said Janik Haberer in a media round before the top duel at Borussia Dortmund on Saturday (3:30 p.m.).

“Of course you’re hungry. You really want to stay up there, to be as successful as possible,” said the 29-year-old. It is “extraordinary” for the club where it is at the moment. Union travels to BVB in third place in the table and has a six-point lead over RB Leipzig, which is in first place, which does not qualify for the “premier class”. The lead in sixth place, which qualifies for the Europa League or the Conference League depending on the outcome of the DFB Cup, is ten points. “The chance is great, but we have to put our performances on the pitch. It’s easy to talk your way into the Europa League or Champions League. But that doesn’t help,” stressed Haberer.

Problems starting at Union Berlin Topic: “Second halves were better”

The “Iron” won in the league twice in a row, but played weak first halves. It was the same with the cup-off in Frankfurt during the week. “For us, the issue in the dressing room is why we didn’t start the last few games so well. Our second halves were better. Then we always get our switching moments,” said Haberer.

In view of the last appearances, coach Urs Fischer sees reasons for restraint: “We don’t have to say the word Champions League. You have to act differently there, not like in the last few games.” He also said: “We formulated our objective correctly by saying that we want to qualify for international business.”
