Jani was surprised by the pricing of cucumbers in Prisma: “It makes no sense at all”

The pricing of Kannelmäki Prisma’s cucumbers surprised Iltalehti’s reader.

An Iltalehti reader who shopped at Prisma Kaare in Helsinki’s Kannelmäki on Tuesday last week was surprised by the pricing of cucumbers in the beef department. Second-grade cucumbers were sold in the store at ten cents more per kilo than ordinary first-grade cucumbers. The first-quality cucumbers were packed in plastic wrap.

– It makes absolutely no sense from the consumer’s point of view that a cucumber wrapped in plastic wrap costs less than one without plastic. You would think that they would want to reduce plastic waste, but such pricing only encourages people to produce plastic, who contacted Iltalehti Jani wondering.

– I ended up buying the more expensive one, albeit with a bit of bitterness.

Prisma Kaare’s prism director Ilkka Riiali says that there was an error in the pricing.

– Prisma Kaare’s first-class cucumber was sold as a batch offer for 1.79 euros. Due to human error, the price of the second-class cucumber was forgotten, and for this reason, the first-class cucumber has been a cheaper option at the time of the batch offer.

Plastic ensures preservation

What about plastic packaging, why are cucumbers usually packed in plastic? Riiali says that first class cucumbers are basically plasticized to ensure better shelf life.

– The price of plasticizing is not essential in terms of price, because it takes place in the same process as weighing and packaging.

The second-class cucumber differs from the first-class cucumber in terms of its shape. In the second class, for example, more curvature is allowed.
