Jan Zwiers was officially installed tonight as the new mayor of Central Drenthe. The King’s Commissioner, Jetta Klijnsma, installed Zwiers in the town hall of Beilen.
In May of this year, the then alderman of Municipal Interests Hoogeveen was nominated as mayor by the confidential committee of Midden-Drenthe. “I have an eye for people, I have empathy. I can express that well in such a beautiful rural municipality,” said Zwiers during his presentation.
In Midden-Drenthe, Zwiers is the successor of acting mayor Cees Bijl, who was deputy after the departure of Mieke Damsma. Damsma left in November 2021 due to a difficult relationship with the city council. Zwiers indicates that he is not afraid that this will happen to him, because “I do not see dark clouds that quickly. I once started in Coevorden without experience. That also went quite well.”
In Hoogeveen, Zwiers will be succeeded as alderman by Niek Wind, who was alderman in the municipality of Borger-Odoorn until March 2022. It will be installed on September 7.
