Jan Thomas (69) simply hands out 500 euros in Meppel: ‘To do something nice for someone else’

He had been thinking about it for some time. To do something beautiful. He coined the word dowsing. “They used to walk with a dowsing rod [om onder meer waterbronnen, edelstenen en metalen in de bodem te vinden, red.]I am now walking the dowsing route. Right now it’s not about all the problems in the world, but about doing something good for someone else. Something small that can bring joy.”

He weaves through the Hoofdstraat at a steady pace. His pockets filled with the envelopes. Behind him a trail of surprised people open the envelope and start reading. “We’re doing pretty well, maybe we should pass it on,” says one couple. A bakery delivery person also receives one. “What should I do with this?” he asks. “Once you have delivered the food, just read it,” says Lensen. As he continues walking to the next passer-by, he calls over his shoulder. “And don’t throw the paper on the floor!”
