Omroep MAX boss Jan Slagter is immensely annoyed that one TV star after another is (temporarily) canceled. He thinks it goes too far to write someone off because of minor misconduct or a different opinion. But is he the right man to go on the barricades against the cancel culture?

‘I wasn’t allowed to come!’

Gijs Groenteman thinks not. He confronted Jan about it last night in his new talk show Marcel & Gijs: “You also once canceled me at Omroep MAX, Jan.”

Jan smiling: “Yes, that happens.”

Gijs: “I was also not allowed to appear on a radio program, because too many jokes were made about you.”

John: “Haha. It is something different.”

Too many jokes

Gijs: “How was it then?”

Jan: “Well, look, also the editor-in-chief…”

Gijs: “I was supposed to be a guest in MAX Nieuwsweekend to talk about my podcast and you then lay down for it because I had made too many jokes about you.”

John: “Hahahaha. Well, in the end, no, no, but in the end the editor-in-chief also said, “Let’s not do it.” That is how it went.”

Cancel a bit

Gijs cynically: “After a conversation with you, the editor-in-chief said: ‘Let’s not do it’?”

Jan laughing: “No, no, no. haha. No, but I mean…”

Gijs: “Canceling a bit is not strange to all of us, is it?”

John: “No.”
