The qualifying race was halted this afternoon when a Formula 1 spectator threw an orange smoke pot onto the track. To prevent this, Jan Lammers, sporting director of the Dutch Grand Prix, calls on you to leave the torches at home.
Lammers is the first to say that he thinks it is a great day. “Max Verstappen back on pole position. I think he should have been third, but he just did it again,” he says happily.
Yet he also briefly returns to the smoke pot that was thrown on the track. “For tomorrow I would like to ask the real orange fans, motorsport fans, Max Verstappen fans, please leave your torches at home,” Lammers calls out. “Just make it fun for each other in a different way. Thank you in advance.”
33-year-old man arrested
Smoke pots are prohibited on the track. The FIA would have immediately removed the thrower from the audience. The police say that a 33-year-old man from Borne has been arrested for throwing the smoke pot. He is currently in custody and being questioned.
Also Max Verstappen, that morning start on pole position, was not happy with the thrower. “It is very stupid to throw something like that on the track,” he told the ANP. “I think they caught him quickly and that’s a good thing, because this is not a good thing.” The driver likes to see the plumes of smoke, but only to a limited extent and on the stands.
