James Morrison: Wife’s cause of death clarified

The cause of Gillian Catchpole’s death has been determined. The coroner’s office published its findings on the death of pop star James Morrison’s wife this Wednesday (January 10, 2024). Morrison found Catchpole lifeless in her home in Whitminster, Gloucestershire, on the morning of January 5, 2024, an inquest has now confirmed. She was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:37 a.m. after emergency services arrived.

Police officers had reportedly been asked to check on the mother-of-two’s welfare a few days earlier.

Coroner Roland Wooderson was informed by police during the hearing on Tuesday, January 9, that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding her death.

The pathologist Dr. Terry Jones gave Catchpole’s preliminary cause of death following the autopsy as hanging.

The 45-year-old Gillian Catchpole had two children with Morrison, daughters Elsie (15) and Ada (5).

James Morrison had known his wife for 22 years

The Mirror reported on Catchpole’s death and Morrison’s grief: “Gill was found dead at the family home on Friday. James is devastated and is supported by his family. He is pulling himself together for the girls, but has asked that the family be left alone to grieve in peace.”

The musician met his long-term partner when he was 17. He spoke about the meeting in the podcast “White Wine Question Time” in October 2021. Gill Catchpole moved into Morrison’s mother’s house as a tenant with her then partner. “It wasn’t the easiest start, but I still see it as a really romantic situation,” the 39-year-old said in the interview.

In recent years, the artist has faced some losses. In an interview with the Independent in 2015, he recounted the events: “In the space of three years, I lost members of three generations of my family: my father, my brother, my nephew.”
