May, along with his colleagues Jeremy Clarkson (62) and Richard Hammond (52) did a stunt in the tunnel where they took turns driving through at full speed. Visibility was limited as the lights only came on at the points where they were driving, giving the trio only a few seconds of reaction time.
According to The Sun May was driving 120 kilometers per hour at the time of the crash and things initially looked bad for the presenter. However, he was conscious and is said to have said he had back and neck pain. He also hit his head hard. For safety, an ambulance team was already on hand in case something went wrong. As a result, May was quickly rushed to the hospital.
It is not the first time that one of the grand Tourmembers, who were previously the popular show Top Gear were injured while shooting. For example, in 2006 Hammond was in a coma for two weeks and in 2017 he made another serious crash. Miraculously, he only suffered a broken leg.
