Diver and filmmaker James Cameron comments on the tragic drama about the imploded submarine “Titan”.
Titanic director James Cameron on Thursday (June 22) commented on the tragedy surrounding the wrecked Titan submarine, which dived to explore the historic shipwreck and is believed to have imploded underwater.
The submarine had been on its way to the “Titanic” since Sunday (June 18) and has since been considered missing. It is now certain that the ship broke up and the passengers died. Among others, the 77-year-old pilot Paul-Henri Nargeolet, who has already completed 35 diving trips to the “Titanic” for research purposes, was in the submarine.

In his interview with “ABC News” the director deals with the case. Cameron says, “A lot of people in the [Tiefseetechnik-]Community were very concerned about this submarine and some of the community leaders even wrote letters to the company saying that what they were doing was too experimental to carry passengers and that it will be certified must and so on.”
There is an awful resemblance to the Titanic disaster, in which the captain was repeatedly warned of the ice ahead of his ship and yet, on a moonless night, drove at full speed into an ice field. And many people died in the process.”
Cameron adds, “And for a very similar tragedy, where warnings were ignored, to be happening right here in this place, with all the diving that’s happening all over the world… I think that’s just amazing. It’s really quite surreal.”
Longtime diver Cameron has made nearly three dozen dives to the wreck of the Titanic.
