James Cameron on ‘Avatar’ sequels: ‘Want to pass the baton’

Apparently James Cameron is toying with the idea of handing over responsibility for future parts of the “Avatar” series. As the director hinted in an interview: “I think at some point – I don’t know if after the third or fourth film – I want to pass the baton to a director that I trust so that I can do other things that are important to me also interest me. Or maybe not,” he told Empire magazine. The “Avatar” films demanded everything from him, according to the 67-year-old. But he still has a few other projects in development that are exciting.

In “Avatar” Cameron negotiates the issues that are close to his heart

For the time being, however, the three-time Oscar winner will remain true to his heart project – “Avatar” is still his world, he said. In the science fiction films he can deal with all the topics that are important to him: family, sustainability, climate, nature. “I got more and more excited as I progressed with the story,” said the Canadian. Film two will be released in German cinemas on December 14 this year; Number three has already been turned off and will appear in any case. “I really hope we can do four and five because ultimately it’s a big story,” said Cameron. How many parts will follow also depends on the market.

Further spin-offs are to be released in cinemas every two years

As early as 2009, the first part of the series flickered across the cinema screens with “Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora”. With worldwide revenues of over 2.8 billion dollars, the film is considered to be the most successful of all times in monetary terms. Five years ago, Cameron began working on four other “Avatar” spinoffs simultaneously. The scheduled film starts were repeatedly postponed – most recently because of the corona pandemic. Now “Avatar: The Way of Water” is expected to premiere in mid-December this year. The remaining parts are scheduled for release in 2024, 2026 and 2028.
