Jail sentences for Ajax fans after riots

After the riots at the Dutch football classic Ajax Amsterdam against Feyenoord Rotterdam on September 24th, a summary judge in Amsterdam sentenced five Ajax fans to 16 days in prison and to social services between 60 and 100 hours. One suspect was acquitted. The public prosecutor’s office had requested prison sentences of several months.

So far, police have arrested 15 people believed to have been involved in the riots. The investigation is ongoing and further arrests could follow. According to their own information, Ajax has identified 32 people and imposed stadium bans on them. Among other things, they threw fireworks onto the field.

The game was canceled in the 55th minute. In front of the Johan Cruyff Arena, Ajax hooligans violently stormed the stadium’s main entrance. Others threw paving stones at the police. Two police officers were injured. In order to restore order, the mobile police had to use tear gas.
