Jail sentence and TBS for man who stabbed sister-in-law and threatened her 3-year-old daughter

A 57-year-old man was sentenced this week to two years in prison and TBS with compulsory treatment for a stabbing at Ida Gerhardtlaan in Amstelveen. He tried to kill his former sister-in-law and threatened her daughter with a knife.

The stabbing took place in the summer of 2021. Officers found the injured victim and her three-year-old daughter on the sidewalk. The approximately foot-long knife that had been used was still near them. The woman was stabbed several times in her back and once in her groin. One of the stabs to her back had caused a collapsed lung.

An investigation by the police showed that the perpetrator was waiting for the woman in a car in front of the house. CCTV footage showed how he made contact with the former sister-in-law and her child. Then he grabbed the child. When the woman wanted to get back at her daughter, she fell and the man stabbed her several times.

He himself stated that he wanted to discuss, among other things, the divorce between his brother-in-law and his wife. The man, who first lived in Afghanistan, has been psychologically examined. It turned out that he has ‘a serious judgment and criticism disorder’. “After the resilience previously shown by the Defendant, whereby he built up a good life in the Netherlands after his arrival from Afghanistan, there has been a downward spiral in recent years as a result of the psychopathology observed,” the court writes in the verdict.

The victim described in her victim impact statement how she still suffers every day from not only the fact that she herself was stabbed several times, but especially from the threat to her daughter. “She experienced that she had to fight for her daughter’s life.” , is stated in the judgment. “That the then three-year-old girl herself experienced a lot of trouble from the suspect’s actions, is also apparent from the drawings she made that were submitted to the court. The court charges the suspect with all of this.”

The court states that this attempted manslaughter and threat justifies a long unconditional prison sentence, but also finds that the man’s responsibility is reduced. The court wants him to be treated as soon as possible. It is a forced treatment, because he denies that there is anything wrong with him and that he does not want to cooperate. Society must also be protected against him.
