Jai Hindley wins the Giro d’Italia – Cycling for Bora-hansgrohe

Of course, the man from Western Australia benefits from the fact that others appreciate him and are therefore happy to work for him. Bora-hansgrohe appeared to be of one piece in this Giro – and thus made the surprising triumph of the new star possible. He rounded things off at the time trial on Sunday. True, he lost seven seconds to his closest rival Carapaz. But the previous triumph in the Dolomites had given him a reassuring lead.

mental stability

Hindley wasn’t bothered by disturbing ghosts from the past either. “Of course, the events of 2020 were still going through my head during the time trial. I had also conquered the pink jersey on the penultimate day. But I lost it in the time trial afterwards. Of course I didn’t want that to happen to me again. I repressed but all thoughts on it now being for the Giro win and a historic moment and just wanted to do a good time trial”, he later explained. He succeeded. The pragmatic focus on the essentials may have helped him.

Cycling veteran at 26

And probably also that cycling is what he knows best. Although he is only 26 years old, he can already be called a veteran. “I’ve been cycling since I was six years old. My brother and my father introduced me to it“, he told the sports show. Father Gordon Hindley is a true cycling enthusiast. He founded his own team called GDT – Gordon’s Development Team.

For GDT also drove the junior. He then came to the Australian youth program and, among other things, took part in the renowned youth race with the national team six years ago Tour de l’Avenir part. He was fifth overall there – framed by Egan Bernal, the later Tour de France-Sieger, and Tao Geoghegan Hart. He lost the Giro against the British in 2020.
