14 professional assignments since February
Former Arsenal professional Jack Wilshere can well imagine staying at the Danish first division club Aarhus GF – but he says he has to wait for the opinion of the new coach before he makes a final decision. “The coach has been sacked so there will be a new coach to take over the team. I would like to come back if the coach wants me after talking to him. As I said before, I really like the place, the city and the club. We’ll see,” said the 30-year-old midfielder at a STATSports event at the Gunners’ Emirates Stadium (quoted via “The Athletic“).
Aarhus signed Wilshere at the end of February after almost eight months without a club and provided him with a contract until the end of the season, which can be extended with an option. The former England international has since made 14 appearances for the first team and contributed two assists. He was in the starting XI seven times and came off the bench just as often.
The Danish club narrowly managed to stay up, not having won a single game since Wilshere’s signing. Coach David Nielsen therefore resigns after five years, a successor has not yet been determined. “When you lose five or six games – I’ve been to clubs where that has happened – it can get awkward and the players start berating and blaming each other. This was not the case here. It was really unique how the players stuck together,” said Wilshere.
With Diagne, Diego Costa & Koscielny: The most valuable clubless
While out of club Wilshere had started to get his coaching licences, getting closer to obtaining the A license which would easily see him become a youth coach at a professional club. That’s why he doesn’t look wistfully towards the end of his career, said the midfielder.
