It’s so hot, isn’t it: but it has ever been warmer in Zoetermeer

“It’s hot, isn’t it!” You have probably heard or spoken this sentence a lot in the past few days. Not surprising, because with these temperatures it is really summer. Yet it has sometimes been warmer in Zoetermeer.

Since 1854, the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) the climate. In all those years, quite a few weather records have been broken, including those of the highest temperature.

Highest temperature ever

At the moment the sparrows are already falling from the rooftops of Zoetermeer, but it could be worse. On July 25, 2019, the highest temperature ever measured in the Netherlands: it was 40.7 degrees Celsius in Gilze-Rijen in Brabant. So it didn’t get that hot in Zoetermeer, but it got very hot here too.

Weather station WeerZoetermeer measured a temperature of 36.9 degrees that day. That is the record since the temperature was measured by this weather station. In a news item from Omroep West we read that the weather station at Rotterdam The Hague measured 36.5 degrees at the time. The official KNMI weather station in Voorschoten measured 35.5 degrees on that date.

Almost a new weather record in 2022

On Tuesday 19 July we came pretty close to the weather record. Around 4.30 pm matt weather station WeatherZoetermeer 35.9 degrees in our city, referred to as extremely hot. The perceived temperature was a bit higher, namely: 40 degrees. So just not a record, but we’ve come pretty close.

Tropical days in Zoetermeer

A year later, in the summer of 2020, another record was broken in the Netherlands: the number of consecutive tropical days. These are days when the temperature exceeds 30 degrees Celsius. Eight days were then recorded with temperatures of 30 degrees or more. The mercury in Zoetermeer also rose to far above that limit that summer.
