It is the only mill on the West Frisian Omringdijk: flour mill de Herder in Medemblik. The mill is in need of a major restoration, but money is needed for that. That is why a fundraising campaign has been started.
“You have a view of the IJsselmeer, the city and the polder. You can almost see the coast on the other side. It’s always a pleasure,” says Bert de Jong when he stands on the position of the mill. He is chairman of the Medemblikker Meelmolen foundation. They want to preserve the view and the mill, which is why restoration is sorely needed.
The mill has been on this spot for about 33 years now and every 25 to 30 years a mill is due for restoration. “Parts just get really bad. They have to be replaced, especially with a view to safety,” says Bert. For example, supporting beams must be replaced, but also parts of the vanes, and more.
Wake up call
Last year it even almost went wrong during the local flea market. “While the mill was turning, a wind board flew off the rod. Fortunately, it ended up in the meadow. But you shouldn’t think about it blowing onto the road and someone getting it in the neck,” says Bert. A “wake-up call” for the foundation to get started with the restoration.
To get the mill safe and restored again, about two tons are needed. That is why the foundation has now started a fundraising campaign. “It’s hard for me to say because I’m not used to asking for money. But people can easily deposit money through the website.”
In addition, they try to generate as much attention as possible for their action. They also write to companies and hand out flyers. “And then we have to wait and see, how much will cross the bridge? And hopefully that will be enough. Left or right, that restoration just has to come.”
