Italy wants special commissioner and campaign against drought | Abroad

Due to the worrying drought in Italy, the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wants to take special measures against water shortages. Rome wants to appoint a special commissioner who will have far-reaching powers. This was announced after a meeting of the Prime Minister and her ministers.

Such commissioners are often deployed in Italy in exceptional situations. An experienced general coordinated the vaccination campaign during the corona pandemic.

The summer of 2022 was the second hottest on record and caused major damage, especially in the north of the country. January of this year was the third warmest on record. Italy is desperate for rain, but it didn’t come in February. Only half of what is normal snow fell in the Alps. The water level in the Po River is dramatic: in some places the water is 70 percent lower than normal.

Italy is currently struggling with a major water shortage, leading to concerns that this year will be even worse than 2022. Especially in and on Lake Garda, it is clear to see how hard the drought is hitting. The water level of the popular lake is 60 centimeters lower than in other winters. The water has never been this low in the last 30 years.

Meloni’s government also plans to launch a campaign to raise public awareness of water conservation. There will also be a special plan with which Rome and the regions want to tackle the crisis together. Meloni also wants simpler rules to be able to respond more quickly to emergencies.
