The Italian Ministry of Justice has requested the extradition of Brazilian ex-footballer Robinho. A spokeswoman for the ministry in Rome confirmed the request to the authorities of the South American country.
Robinho played a hundred caps for Brazil and played as a striker for AC Milan in the Italian Serie A between 2010 and 2015. An Italian court sentenced him in December 2021 to nine years in prison for allegedly raping a woman in 2013 with five other men in a nightclub in Milan.
Robinho, who also played for Manchester City and Real Madrid, has consistently denied the allegations.
Brazil’s constitution prohibits the extradition of its citizens. However, Robinho could be arrested if he himself travels abroad and the authorities there then execute the international arrest warrant against him.
