Italy and Iceland drew 1-1 in group D of the European Football Championship on Thursday evening in Manchester. Both teams still have a chance to qualify for the next round.

Italy had started the tournament with a big defeat to France (5-1), while Iceland took a point against Belgium (1-1).

Already in the third minute it was hit for the Icelanders. A long throw-in came at the feet of Karolína Vilhjálmsdóttir, who finished beautifully. In the remainder of the first half, Italy failed to recover from this early downer. They mainly had possession of the ball in the midfield and hardly created any opportunities that were played out.

After the break, the Italians were led by substitute Barbara Bonansea (much better in the game. In the 62nd minute it was Valentina Bergamaschi who scored from a cross from the left and tied the score again.

In the remainder of the match, coach Milena Bertolini’s team had several chances to win the match. In the 72nd minute, star Bonansea hit the post; a minute later, a bet by Flaminia Simonetti went just wide.

Iceland had little to say after the break, but in the 87th minute they had a great chance to score via Vilhjálmsdóttir, who had also scored the opening goal. However, she shot completely detached.

Both teams can still go through to the next round, but it is no longer in their own hands. On Thursday at 9 pm France will play against Belgium; Monday at 9 p.m. Iceland-France and Italy-Belgium are on the program.
