Italy and Great Britain have been relegated to the Ice Hockey World Championships in Finland.
The Italians lost their last and decisive group game against Kazakhstan 2:5 (1:2, 1:1, 0:2) in Helsinki and are therefore last in the German preliminary round group A.
In Group B, Austria won spectacularly in the evening 5:3 (0:1, 0:1, 5:1) against the British, who had led 3:1 up to 13 minutes before the end. Great Britain is thus firmly in last place in the group.
Record world champion Canada surprisingly lost the second game in a row against Denmark 2: 3 (0: 2, 1: 0, 1: 1) in the evening. The Canadians had previously lost 6-3 to Switzerland. Nevertheless, the title contender has already qualified for the quarter-finals, which the Danes can now hope for.
Due to Canada’s surprising defeat, Germany on Tuesday in the last preliminary round match against Switzerland (11:20 a.m. / Sport1 and MagentaSport) is enough for Germany to avoid their supposedly strongest quarter-final opponents as second in the group and continue playing in Helsinki.
In Tampere, the Czech Republic secured their place in the quarter-finals with a 1-0 (1-0, 0-0, 0-0) win over the USA. The USA still need a point for Tuesday’s quarter-finals against Norway. Hosts Finland and Sweden have already qualified for the quarter-finals in Group B.
