Italy and Canada in the final

Germany’s conquerors Italy and Canada are in the final of the Billie Jean King Cup. The Italians beat Slovenia 2-0 in Seville on Saturday and are aiming for their fifth title in the tennis team competition. Canada surprisingly beat top favorites Czech Republic 2-1 and is in the final for the first time.

Martina Trevisan brought her team to winning ways with a 7:6 (8:6), 6:3 against the Slovenian Kaja Juvan. In the second singles, Italian number one Jasmine Paolini secured her place in the final with a 6:2, 4:6, 6:3 win against Tamara Zidansek. Italy last reached the final when they won the title in 2013.

Barbora Krejcikova, seven-time Grand Slam doubles champion, initially put the Czech Republic in the lead with a 6:2, 6:1 win against Canada’s Marina Stakusic. But Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova lost 2:6, 6:2, 3:6 against Leylah Fernandez, in the decisive duel Gabriela Dabrowski and Fernandez won against Katerina Siniakova and Krejcikova with 7:5, 7:6 (7:3).

After the 3-0 opening defeat against Italy, the selection of the German Tennis Federation (DTB) no longer had a chance of making it into the semi-finals. This was followed by another 0:3 against France.
