Italians continue to search for missing people after devastating landslide on holiday island Ischia | Abroad

The search for missing people on the Italian island of Ischia continues after yesterday’s landslide. The emergency services are still looking for eleven people in the disaster area. So far, authorities have confirmed one death. Thirteen people were injured. The havoc is great.

Small but densely populated Ischia is located off the coast of Naples. The landslide was triggered by sudden heavy rainfall near the town of Casamicciola. At least ten buildings collapsed and hundreds of people were trapped. Another two hundred people were advised to evacuate because there was also a risk of collapse in their area.

31-year-old woman killed

Yesterday it was unclear for some time whether and how many deaths the landslide had caused. Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini reported that eight people had not survived, but his Interior Affairs colleague Matteo Piantedosi later said no deaths had yet been confirmed. It is now known that at least one person has died: a 31-year-old woman who owned a shop on the island.

LOOK. Italy is not yet free of the problems, says VTM weatherman David Dehenauw: “We expect between 100 and 200 liters of rain per square meter in 48 hours”

Quest with drones

Rescue workers worked through the night to find the missing people, but mudslides and strong winds made the island difficult to navigate. Among other things, they use drones to find people.
