The traditional Italian football club Catania Calcio is insolvent. A court ruled on Wednesday after the purchase offer by a Roman entrepreneur to save the Sicilian association was assessed as inadequate.
The third division, which started in Serie A from 2006 to 2014, collapsed under a mountain of debt of 56 million euros.
In 2015, the association was the victim of a bribery scandal involving its then president. Antonino Pulvirenti admitted having manipulated five games.
As a result, Catania was downgraded to the third division and started there in the 2015/16 season with a deduction of nine points. Since then, Catania has always remained in the third division.
