A construction site every twelve kilometres. In 2021 the average was one construction site every 18 km. Two years on, the state of health of the Italian motorway network has not improved at all according to data emerging from a new research by Altroconsumo

It’s official, again this summer, to travel along some of the highways of the Belpaese will mean facing numerous inconveniences and disservices. The “good news” was heralded by a new investigation by Other consumption from which emerges a clear deterioration in the state of health of the Italian motorway network which, despite efforts, has not yet improved. As already happened in 2021, the organization is back on nine different Italian motorways for a total of around 1,500 kilometres of which, almost 10%, well 134 kilometres to be precise, they were affected by the presence of construction sites. As stated by Federico Cavalloexternal relations manager of Other consumption: “Increasing construction sites, restrictions and important consequences on traffic and safety: this is what the disinvestments in maintenance by Autostrade from 2009 to 2018 led to. The U-turn undertaken by the new management, however appreciable, is still compared with the heavy legacy of the past. So that yesterday’s missed interventions end up leading, today, to an accumulation effect along the network and strong repercussions on users. In short, the road has been taken but there is still a lot to do.”
Construction sites are growing
—
According to the data revealed by the research, it currently appears a construction site every twelve kilometres. In the 2021 the average was one yard each eighteen kilometres. Also in 2021 they had been in everything eighty construction sites surveyed in approximately 1,500 kilometers travelled, while in April of this year the total rose to 117. Two disconcerting data: the overall duration more than a year of construction sites in some sections of the motorway and the state of emergency lanes. The latter, as reported by the analysis, were closed for long stretches during the journey due to the works. It’s about 106 stretches unusable for a total of 120 kilometers of inaccessible emergency lanes where it is impossible to stop in case of need. Even in some areas they are totally absent, while in other stretches also the parking spaces they cannot be used.
The worst routes
—
The analysis of Other consumption report the worst highway sections. On the A1 Milan-Bologna, the organization traveled for about ten kilometers without an emergency lane, encountering thirteen building sites out of a total of 180 km. There A14 Bologna-Pescara it was certainly one of the most problematic stretches faced during the journey: no less than thirty construction sites in almost 360 kilometres, on average one every twelve kilometres, for a total of around 34 kilometers affected by road works. From Bologna to Pescara the emergency lane was closed for almost 28 kilometres. The most critical situation, again according to the research, was found in the stretch that connects the Brands and theAbruzzo: out of 150 kilometers of motorway, almost seventeen are traveled in a single lane. Arriving at A24 and the A25 there are ten construction sites in 200 kilometers and you travel for almost seven kilometers on a single lane and for 6.5 kilometers without an emergency lane. Back on A1Between Rome And Florence, there are 26 construction sites, distributed over just 24 kilometres, during which the emergency lane was closed. Along the A12 Viareggio-Genoa, in just over eighty kilometers of motorway there were four construction sites surveyed. Finally, for the last part of the journey, from Spice to Milan, Other consumption has traveled two highways, the A12 Viareggio Genoa to the north and the A7 Genoa-Milan: eleven construction sites found along the first section for a total of about sixteen kilometers traveling on a single lane with carriageway jumps for long stretches, even inside tunnels and on viaducts, at a maximum speed of 60 kilometers per hour. face the A7 from Genoa to Milan it turned out the worst trait: about 39 out of 120 kilometers were affected by 19 construction sites, or 32% of the total.
