Italian Film Week: must-see movies

Once again, for 7 days, the 9th edition in Buenos Aires of the usual Italian Film Week, at the Cinépolis Recoleta Complex. Organized by Cinecittà, with the support of the Italian Embassy, the Italian Institute of Culture of Buenos Aires and ICE (Italian Agency for Foreign Trade), it is a quality event where moviegoers and lovers of the seventh art can see the latest news. cinema recent.

This year there is a selection that includes 11 films that represent the most significant of film production of the moment with varied themes, diverse aesthetics and the work of established filmmakers together with young people who provide a new perspective on current issues.

Among the options, we suggest not to stop watching the three films starring the great actor Tony Servillo, the most recognizable face of current Italian cinema.

In “The first day of my life” (The first day of my life), the new film by successful director Paolo Genovese (Perfect Strangers) who came to accompany its premiere, gets into the shoes of a mysterious man who appears in the lives of four people. His purpose, in a society that increasingly tends to sink more into discouragement and the meaninglessness of life, is to show them what the world would be like without them in a suggestive and emotional story.

In “Qui rido io” (The King of Laughter), Directed by Mario Martone, it embodies the life of the proverbial actor Eduardo Scarpetta, one of the most important actors and authors of the Neapolitan theater at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, father of the legendary performers Titina, Eduardo and Peppino. The film narrates a real event dealing with the first historical copyright trial in Italy, when the popular artist decides to stage a farce and ends up being sued for plagiarism on opening night.

Finally, in “La stranezza” (Strangeness), Under the direction of Roberto Andò, he composes the playwright Luigi Pirandello, winner of the Nobel Prize in 1934. We are in 1920, when during a brief stay in Sicily, the writer meets two unique theatrical characters, Onofrio Principato and Sebastiano Vella, some amateurs who are rehearsing plays with the actors of his amateur company. From that encounter the idea of “Six characters in search of an author” could have arisen, one of his most brilliant theatrical pieces.

Other intense proposals to highlight, related to plots that present women who face criminal organizations, are “Una femmina” (A Woman), the haunting debut of Francesco Costabile with the outstanding performance of the young Lina Siciliano. She stars as Rosa, a rebellious girl, whose mother died under strange circumstances, and who lives with her grandmother and her uncle in a small town in Calabria. Ready to challenge the ‘Ndrangheta, she does not hesitate to carry out her revenge and face this fearsome criminal organization that manages the distribution of drugs in the area.

There is also a similar situation in “Primadonna”, directed by Marta Savina, with the presence of Claudia Gusmano, brings us the story of Lia, a young woman who reacts to the most terrible violence with an act of rebellion that disarms the social customs of her time. In a world where the law of the strongest rules, the mafia is entrenched and accepted as a natural part of life, the powerful decide and the weak execute, their courage will open the way to the fight for women’s rights.
