Italian climate activists take action in Scrovegni Chapel in Padua | Abroad

Italian climate activists from action group Ultima Generazione (“Last Generation”) broke into the Scrovegni Chapel in the Italian city of Padua on Sunday. Two young men chained themselves to a balustrade in the small Gothic church, known for its frescoes.

As tourists walked through the hall to admire the art, protesters warned of the impact of climate change. The police eventually carried them outside.

Ultima Generazione activists are known for protesting in front of well-known works of art. On Thursday, they protested in the Vatican Museums in Rome. They lined up with the Laocoön group, the well-known group of statues depicting the Trojan priest and seer Laocoön, who wanted to warn the Trojans not to bring in the Trojan horse. “No gas and no coal”, read a sign that the activists were holding.

The activist group also demonstrated on June 22 in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, in front of the painting ‘Primavera’ by Renaissance artist Sandro Botticelli. Previously, they blocked roads, such as the busy ring road around Rome.
