It rained rainbows yesterday: how is that possible?

Changeable weather sometimes leaves us with a gray landscape, but autumn proves that there is always room for wonderful natural phenomena. Thanks to the special position of the sun and the antics of rain and sunshine, our days are currently brightened up with countless rainbows. How is that possible?

Recently, rainy periods and sunny moments have repeatedly followed each other. As is common knowledge, in both rain and sun, a rainbow sometimes appears behind the clouds. NH weatherman Jan Visser explains: “There are many more rainbows now than in the summer. This is because the sun is much lower in the fall.”

A rainbow is created when light shines through a droplet of water. These water droplets now most often occur due to rain, but on sunny days rainbows can also be seen when watering the grass or in a fountain.

Big rainbow opportunity

The chance of a rainbow is the same everywhere in North Holland. This way everyone has an equal chance of winning ‘the mythical pot of gold’. According to NH weatherman Visser, the chance of (multiple) rainbows increases when there is changeable weather.

Because this morning starts with rain, alternating with some sunshine, and there is little cloud, you may be able to spot a beautiful rainbow this morning. Then you have to be there early, according to the weatherman. “It will rain in the afternoon and it will even become stormy in the evening. Due to the cloudiness, the chance of rainbows is not that great.”
