The skating shop of 85-year-old Lenie Hugtenburg in Haarlem is also very busy today. Many Haarlem residents come to her for a new pair of blades or a makeover of their current skates.
“They think they can skate on natural ice this week,” Lenie told NH in a full store. Her customers agree: “I think it is possible, because it is cold,” says one of the customers.
But ice master Jan Koene from Jisp thinks the expectations are a bit optimistic. “There isn’t even an inch of ice here,” he says, pointing to the water next to him.
“Nowadays they think they can cross 1 centimeter of ice. Perhaps on flooded land, but not here in the polder,” he says firmly. He tries to save people from disappointment and explains that it will have to freeze a little longer before skating on the polders can take place.
