In Palmuje Alahärmä’s home, an artist recovering from an infection answers the phone Juhani Palmu78. Palmu says that his health turned really bad around Easter.
– I already had symptoms of the flu before Easter, and especially my lungs became painful. At Easter, my health started to deteriorate clearly, I had to go to the health center.
In the hospital, Palmu was examined. The main thing was to rule out pneumonia. The artist was diagnosed with a bad flu, prescribed antibiotics, and discharged.
– I was really sick, especially the cough was terrible, it felt like my lungs were going to fall apart. It must be said that I was afraid I was going to die, because the spirit was not passing and there was a lot of pain. I have never experienced a cold like this.
– Fortunately, the mucus started to come off, apparently the antibiotics started to work. Still, insomnia has continued to bother me, because I haven’t been able to sleep properly because of the cough.
Even though his condition has started to improve, Juhani is still very worried.
– The feeling is uncertain, I don’t know for sure where to go. I have further tests coming up next week, we’ll see what they say.
A bad flu also bothered me Leila Palmua57.
– I had similar symptoms. My condition was such that I couldn’t take Juhan to the hospital. However, it was special in the situation that he was discharged quickly with medication.
– Fortunately, Juhani has had five corona vaccinations and I have had three. Now the corona was not detected, but the situation could have been even worse without vaccines. It’s also lucky that we didn’t have time to go to Levi’s sales show at Easter.
Leila also has enough humor to lighten the situation.
– I have slept with earplugs for the first time in my life. This is because Juhani makes the same noise as a tractor. I’ve still woken up sometimes, despite the plugs, because Juhan’s cough gusts make me tickle too.

Also light
Before getting sick, Juhani and Leila held sales exhibitions in Ylivieska and Lempäälä and met people.
– They cheered me up a lot, as did staying at a hotel in Tampere. I got extra strength, says Juhani.
The artist also says that he is happy about spring.
– It’s the best time of the year because the light increases. Over the years, I have painted the most paintings in the spring. I would also say that my best paintings were born in the spring.
Although spring brings light, over the years, Juhan has had headwinds in terms of health. He had to have the fingers of his left hand amputated due to burns. In addition, his left leg has been amputated above the knee.
The burns occurred when the air mattress of Palmu’s electric bed caught fire. Fortunately for the artist, there were close friends who saved him from the flames. However, Palmu’s condition was very serious, and his heart stopped twice during the treatment.
Palmu had a very serious accident in 2017 as well. Nine of his toes had to be amputated due to burns. At that time, the newspaper lit by the candle caught fire on Palmu’s pants in the couple’s previous home. He has also been found to have cancerous tumors.
Leila says that Juhan is aiming for the same prosthetic leg.
– We received strong faith and support from the private hospital. They urged to continue with university nursing, but the matter did not progress there.
– They said that Juhan must first be able to stand properly on one leg. Now the matter is being investigated. I don’t understand that there isn’t a solution to this. If necessary, we look for help, for example, from abroad.
Finally, Leila sums up the feelings of both.
– Let’s look ahead and see things positively. The new design products, which are made based on Juhan’s paintings, also bring additional joy.
