It doesn’t happen, but if it happens …the plot and the cast

In the United States of 2019, the incumbent president Chambers (Bon Odenkirk) decides not to run for the second term. Thus, a passage opens up for Charlotte, competent secretary of state, who cherishes the dream of becoming the first female president of the United States. Meanwhile in New York Fred Flarsky quits the newspaper he works for as not in line with the dictates of the new publisher.

Although it is a capable and well-known investigative journalist, can’t find a new job. Desperate, he asks his best friend for help, Lance (O’Shea Jackson Jr.)who invites him to a charity event in which Field also takes part. Fred knows Charlotte very well: in the past she was his babysitter, as well as his first crush.

The first meeting in years goes better than expected. They remember times gone by and their looks are full of tenderness. The idyll, however, is interrupted by Parker Wembley (Andy Serkis), the publisher who bought the newspaper where Flarsky worked. Fred tries to restrain himself, but the thirst for justice is stronger than him and attacks him, falling down the stairs. The video goes viral e Charlotte, instead of getting angry about the unfortunate over-program, reads some of his articles and hires him to write his speeches..

Field’s entourage isn’t thrilled with the choice, especially the inflexible Maggie Millikin (June Diane Raphael). Charlotte, on the other hand, trusts Fred and his advice, to the point of not following the guidelines provided by the polls, and continues her program. A winning choice.

Charlotte and Fred, an impossible couple

Over time, the two get to know each other more deeply and fall in love. It could be the culmination of a love story born by chance, but it is instead the beginning of a series of problems and uncertaintiescrossed by moments of pure comedy. Charlotte is the prototype of the perfect career woman that voters can’t resist.

As beautiful as it is prepared, the road to the White House seems clear, but a relationship with a man against the system, clumsy, with unsuitable ways, little inclined to etiquette and dressed as a boy is not a good business card.

After a series of daring adventures, culminating in Chambers blackmailing Charlotte, Field gives Fred an ultimatum: his image needs to be cleaned up. At stake is the presidency of the United States, a goal he has always worked for and which he does not want to give up. Flarsky, however, is a man of iron convictions and, despite being in love, decides to leave the scene.

The magic seems to be gone forever, but the final word is not yet said. Beyond appearances, Charlotte and Fred are much more alike than they think and the feeling that binds them is perhaps stronger than any obstacle. Will Charlotte manage to become the first female president of the United States and Fred the first “First Mister”?

It doesn’t happen, but if it happens …the review

Once again, Charlize Theron proves to be a versatile actresscapable of using multiple registers and piercing the screen. Seth Aaron Roger is perfect in the role of the journalist a little Peter Pan a little Don Quixotewho hopes to change the world with his articles, whatever the cost.

In Levine’s film, June Diane Raphael confirms his figure, already appreciated in Grace and Frankie. In the Netflix series with Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin is Brianna, the granite, careless and spoiled daughter of Grace (Fonda)with a strong sense of humor.

It doesn’t happen, but if it happens ...is a brilliant romantic comedywhich he does with wise irony and light language an interesting and realistic examination of contemporary politics. A policy in which, sometimes, the image and the search for reassurance prevail over the content and the real needs of a nation.
