A rocket was also fired from Gaza on Wednesday evening, after which Israeli warplanes attacked the Gaza Strip, eyewitnesses reported to the French news agency AFP. It is not clear what was hit by Israel.
On Monday evening, a rocket was fired at Israel for the first time this year, but that attack was also without consequences. The actions nevertheless increase tension in the region after the recent religious riots on the Temple Mount.
Hamas, which controls Gaza, had already warned that any incident at the al-Aqsa mosque in East Jerusalem would mean crossing a “red line.” The Islamist resistance movement accused Israel of tolerating attacks on believers.
Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that Hamas is engaged in a wild smear campaign. “That is the truth. Israel is doing everything it can so that we can safely enjoy our holidays, Jews, Muslims and Christians.”
