The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for an attack on a mosque in the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday. At least ten people were killed on Friday. The attack was committed with an explosive device that was detonated near a bus, IS said on Telegram.
More than a week ago, the terrorist group also claimed to have been responsible for a bloody attack on a Shiite mosque in northern Afghanistan. At least eleven people were killed. The attack in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif was the second attack on a Shia target in the country in three days.
The Shia Hazara minority makes up between 10 and 20 percent of Afghanistan’s predominantly Sunni population of 38 million. The group is a frequent target of attacks, which have been attributed variously to the Taliban and Islamic State. Last Tuesday, an attack in a Shiite neighborhood of the capital Kabul killed at least six people and injured 25.
